How to Use Google for Keyword Research - Part Two

March 25, 2009 on 10:57 pm | In Keyword Research |

In this part of the lesson we are going to go into checking on competition. If you haven’t already read part one on keyword research then you should read that first. When checking on competition we first need to go to Google and in quotes type in our keyword prase in quotes. For example “Dog Training”.

First we look and see what the number of competing pages are Google glady gives us this information of on the right. It will read results 1 of 10 of about 9,500,000 for “Dog Training”. In this example we have over 9.5 million competing pages. This would not be a keyword we would want to try and grab a number one spot on as there are just too many pages.

We want to look for under 10,000 pages and the lower the better. You may be able to break these rules but you need to analyse the pages on the first page of google. Are they reference sites like about.com or wikipedia. If so you will have a very hard time beating those types of pages. You want to see if there are any hubpages, ezinearticles or squidoo pages. If so you may be able to grab a spot by doing some extra to your articles and pages.

In conclusion the king of search is Google and now that they give us the information we need to make good decisions it should become one of your favorite tools for doing keyword research.
