Can Google Really Tell What the Image Is?

In a recent news article Google had presented a prototype image search technology that will be able to tell what is in the image.

For example when we now go out and look for an image using googles image search our results can greatly vary because what is shown is based on the image tags and text around the image.

Google’s new technology would actually be able to know what the image actually is. For example we as humans can just look a a picture that contains a Butterfly and know that it’s a butterfly however when you do a search for a butterfly now on googles image search you can get a whole bunch of images that don’t have anything to do with butterflies.

Recent technology has had great advances in image analysis. Computers can now tell if there is a face in the image however it has been very difficult for them to see montains or other objects.

What google has said is that they are coming up with a sort of pagerank for images. The are pulling together all the image technologies they call computer vision and creating a web framework for it.

Google has already started this new technology by taking the top search terms and finding the images that are related to them then using those images as a baseline. They say that they have already been able to return 83 percent less irrelevant images.

So what does this all have to do with listbuilding. Well It’s always good to know what the big G is up to next. Just think that images may play a big part of getting your site better rankings. Think about it. Why would they go to all this trouble if no one was looking for image content.

Ok so marketers let’s take advantage of this newest technology and prepare our sites in advance.
